We’ll reduce stereotypes and perceptions based on implicit bias against other diverse groups and even ourselves. We can't control our characteristics. Using inclusive language makes everyone feel safe and not judged. Common terms to avoid: Banana Fresh off the boat Chink Foreign Minority Chinese (without adding a word, "person") All these words must be avoided. Other examples of more inclusive words to use: International people People of color Chinese person (with an emphasis of using the word, "person") Indian person Other examples of common signing words to avoid: Indian Chinese Japanese These signing words are offensive. The National Asian Pacific Islander Deaf Coalition’s mission is to provide space for collective growth within our Asian, Pacific Islander, Middle Eastern, and Desi Deaf, DeafBlind, and DeafDisabled communities. Our purpose is to build a stronger sense of unity and cooperation in the API deaf community while defending our rights and providing a safe space for those who need it. |
